Curious about 010 Editor regular expression future

The 010 Editor manual says that the editor “uses a [regular expression] syntax similar to Ruby/Perl as implemented by the Oniguruma regular expression library.”

The GitHub repository for the Oniguruma regular expression library says that the project has been archived as of April 24, 2025. Onigmo, a well-known fork of and alternative to Oniguruma, has likewise been mostly dormant for years, with its last two merged commits (which were just corrections to documentation) being from mid-2024.

So I’m curious about Sweetscape’s plans.

Currently 010 Editor’s regular expression engine works very well for me, and Sweetscape has been responsive in fixing issues that I and others have reported.

Of course, the end of development for Onig(uruma|mo) (an attempt at a regex joke) is perhaps not a big enough reason for Sweetscape to change directions.

Nevertheless, I’m curious. Thoughts?

Oniguruma has been a nice regex library for us, with pretty good speed and a pretty good feature set. Other libraries seem to have more features but less speed, or more speed but less features. We looked at the hyperscan library for a bit which is supposed to be quite fast, but is missing some important features like backreferences. If Oniguruma has really been abandoned we would eventually have to look at all alternative, but hopefully someone will pick up the Onigmo fork or start a new fork. We’re always open to suggestions for alternatives.
